A one-day course developed specifically for drivers of commercial vans to raise professional standards and improve van safety on London’s roads. The course is for anyone who drives a van –as a professional driver or driving a van for any part of the working day. The course focuses on the skills needed to improve driver behaviour to operate safely, reducing the risk of vans being involved in collisions and enabling van drivers to share the road safety with other road users.
The course consists of two 3.5-hour modules (both delivered on the same day) and can facilitate up to 24 people per course.
What will you learn from Van Smart?
How to effectively plan and prepare for a journey
How and why roads are changing to accommodate active travel, such as walking and cycling.
The hazards of the urban environment and how they can create distractions for drivers.
Who vulnerable road users are, and how they interact with traffic. How to share the road safely with others
Benefits of attending Van Smart• Equips commercial van drivers with the tools to operate safely in an urban environment• Helps you comply with the law and meet contractual requirements for clients including Transport for London, and construction clients signed up to the CLOCS Standard.
Please note: Lunch and travel costs are not included.
Refreshments: Tea & Coffee available
(Registration: starts at 7.30am)
It is your responsibility to ensure you plan your journey in advance. If you do not attend there will be no refund of your course fee. If you turn up after the course has started you will be refused entry and any rebooking will be subject to a full rebooking fee.
IMPORTANT: Any driver attending the Vansmart course must have their identity checked by a photo card driving licence. This will allow FBG Training to register the driver onto the Transport for London master Vansmart database which confirms the driver has attended the course.
For a driver to be uploaded to the FORS/TfL register they must complete the entire course. Generally, the only reasons for not taking part in the cycle element are on medical grounds, or if during the cycle familiarisation session, the driver is risk assessed as not safe to ride a bike on public roads – in these instances it is acceptable for the drivers to walk the course meeting up with the cyclists at the exercise/discussion points and joining in with the discussion.
The course involves both classroom and an on-road practical cycling element totalling seven hours training plus breaks, therefore please ensure that you dress accordingly. Hi-Vis and helmets are provided and must be worn. (In the event of inclement weather, the on-road practical module will be replaced by a classroom based theory module of the same duration).
All bookings are subject to our Cancellation Policy and by registering for a course you are agreeing to its terms. Email: email@example.com for cancellation policy.
