This course has been developed specifically for drivers of commercial vans to raise professional standards and improve van safety on London’s roads. The course is for anyone who drives a van –as a professional driver or driving a van for any part of the working day. The course focuses on the skills needed to improve driver behaviour to operate safely, reducing the risk of vans being involved in collisions and enabling van drivers to share the road safety with other road users.

*How to effectively plan and prepare for a journey
*How and why roads are changing to accommodate active travel, such as walking and cycling.
*The hazards of the urban environment and how they can create distractions for drivers.
*Who vulnerable road users are, and how they interact with traffic. How to share the road safely with others

*Equips commercial van drivers with the tools to operate safely in an urban environment
*Helps you comply with the law and meet contractual requirements for clients including Transport for London, and construction clients signed up to the CLOCS Standard.
Practical Module (3.5 hours) After the initial bicycle control skills training, drivers ride on bikes to areas of potential conflict including junctions, traffic lights and Advanced Stop Lines. Subjects covered include: –
*Introducing active travel, driver fitness and health
*Giving drivers a cyclist’s perspective of riding on busy roads and an understanding of the issues faced by vulnerable road users
*Recognising best driving practice around cyclists
Practical on road experience at areas of potential driver/cyclist conflict including junctions, traffic lights and Advanced Stop Lines

The course involves an on-road practical cycling element therefore please ensure that you dress accordingly. Hi-Vis and helmets are provided and must be worn. (In the event of inclement weather, the on-road practical module will be replaced by a classroom based theory module of the same duration).

IMPORTANT: Any driver attending the Vansmart course must have their identity checked by a photo card driving licence. This will allow FBG Training to register the driver onto the Transport for London master Vansmart database which confirms the driver has attended the course.
Whilst every attempt is given to deliver a FORS VanSmart course, due to circumstances this is not always possible.
However, a FORS Safe Urban Driving course will be delivered in its place which Van Drivers can attend. This also meets the FORS Silver criteria.

COVID-19
Before attending the training course you must be able to answer NO to the following
1. Do you have or have you had any symptoms of COVID -19 in the last 7 days?
• New persistent cough
• High temperature
• Loss of taste or smell
2. Have you been in contact with anyone that has had Covid 19 in the last 14 days
3. Are you or a member of your household currently self-isolating
If the answer is YES to any of these please contact the telephone number shown on the joining instructions.
If you have answered NO to the above, please attend the course.
FBG Training will be following Government guidelines in light of the current COVID – 19 pandemic.
This is to ensure everyone’s safety whilst attending. We will take your temperature upon arrival with a non-contact infrared body thermometer gauge (If your temperature is above 38 degrees you will be asked NOT to attend (Yours and each delegate’s safety is our priority).
We may provide you with a health questionnaire and request your contact details for track and tracing.
We will provide hand sanitiser which must be used before entering the room and after you have completed your registration.
We will be providing face masks and gloves for all delegates.
We would also like each delegate to bring their own pen to take notes from the course.
